So, for example, my parents day, my mom was in a citizen. So she would always just the fact that since we were born here in the U.S., we have citizenship status, we have all the rights and privileges as others were born in the U.S. so don't waste it. And I was always kind of confused, like, what do you mean, mom? You know, you're here, too. So I don't really quite understand. And she would explain to me how she's not a U.S. citizen, so she doesn't get the same rights and privileges and, you know, freedom, so to speak. Me and then I and I did. So she always stressed on going to school, finishing your your K-through-12 education, going to get a higher education because I have the citizenship to do it and to do something with my life other than just waste it. So having freedom, basically.
text/plain
https://archive.empathyarchive.com/collections/1674/collection_resources/56833/file/130979#t=4.26,67.35
https://archive.empathyarchive.com/collections/1674/collection_resources/56833/file/130979/transcript/49479/annotation/3
Speaker 1: How do you think that being a first generation citizen has had an effect on your experience as a citizen? So just being a first generation again, both my parents, the highest education they receive was their diploma from high school. So me going to college, it's one thing getting accepted and the second thing actually graduating. So the fact that I was first generation Mexican-American, oldest in the family out of six to go to college and graduate, it's really it's really been a big deal on the family. My my five younger siblings all look up to me. And because of me doing that one step of just graduating, they want to go to college now and they want to graduate, you know? So I always just tell them the importance of, you know, be better than me, you know, just because I'm first Gen and I graduated from UCLA doesn't mean you can do the same thing at a more prestigious institution. And then what are your parents expectations for? You also kind of mentioned that, but and then what are your expectations for yourself?
text/plain
https://archive.empathyarchive.com/collections/1674/collection_resources/56833/file/130979#t=133.56,147.33
https://archive.empathyarchive.com/collections/1674/collection_resources/56833/file/130979/transcript/49479/annotation/6
Speaker 2: So answering the first question were the expectations. Did my parents have in their generation they should tell me, just get through the day. It was really just going to work. Providing food on the table. Having a house and a roof over our head. Having clothes. That was it. That was your expectations. Just making sure they had money to feed to feed our six kids. They didn't really have any goals or motivation to better themselves. It was just really. Well, I take that back. Their goal was to better us or not themselves. So that's what they expected was just to give for us. That's all it was. With that said, leading to the second question, what my parents expectations were for myself because of everything they went through, all their trials and tribulations of, you know, working day in, day out, Monday through Sunday. You know, there's no holiday breaks for them. They were working 365 days out of the year. So for that, they really molded my mind and more and more than me to with the expectation of, you know, going to high school, graduate high school, you know, working hard, going to college, graduating college, gained a career. And they hold that same expectation to all six, all five of us. So it was a lot of weight on my shoulders. But I know in the end it was all for them because of what they went through. So I worked hard for them. And today, you know, this is all from my parents because I know they went through a lot, especially my mom crossing over and just posting here. But day in, day out. Third question What are expectations for myself? My expectations is to just continue to gain higher education. I've already accomplished that through earning my Bachelor's of Arts at UC Riverside. Now I plan to get my master's as well and to really hold that expectation out for my kids, my kids into learning and graduate high school. They need to graduate college, they need to get their masters and that needs to be just like a given type of thing. Like, Oh, yet I'm gonna go do it, you know, No worries. They're just going to do it because I know they're capable of doing it. If I can do it, they can do it. So and then, of course, my wife would have that that same motivation because at the same time she'd be at that level going to school and just gaining knowledge and bettering our family as a whole.
text/plain
https://archive.empathyarchive.com/collections/1674/collection_resources/56833/file/130979#t=148.41,301.98
https://archive.empathyarchive.com/collections/1674/collection_resources/56833/file/130979/transcript/49479/annotation/7
https://archive.empathyarchive.com/collections/1674/collection_resources/56833/file/130979#t=304.72,307.15
https://archive.empathyarchive.com/collections/1674/collection_resources/56833/file/130979/transcript/49479/annotation/8
Speaker 2: So a couple of examples. I remember when I was younger. I'd say maybe ten, 12 years old. I went to church and we went to a, um, um, a dual speaking church. So it was English and Spanish and English was from, I guess like 8 to 10 and then 11 to 1 was Spanish. So they had an English speaking and they had the Spanish speaking. And I remember one time went to the English speaking and, you know, listening and preaching the word. And I remember one of the, um, the ushers, they tapped me and they said, Oh, would you prefer going to the Spanish church instead? And I was kind of confused, like, why was. You know, are they giving out something on, you know, what's the case? Why, why do you want me to go the other one? And then he said, Well, I see that you're, you know, you're Mexican and you might feel more comfortable going to the Spanish church. At the time, I didn't really realize what he meant. You know, I was ten, ten or 12 years old. I was just kind of like, um, I'll just stay here for now. I'm good. No biggie. But now, realizing he was, I'm assuming, you know, racial profiling because I was Mexican. Because the color of my skin, because the way I was dressed, because the way I looked, he just assumed, Why is he here? If he belonged another one, he could. Could have been looking out for me. Could have just made an assumption. But same time could have been racially profiling me. So I'll never know. But that was. That was one case. The second case would be when I when I helped my friends move their move into a new home and the day their mom or pizza. And it was me, my brother, actually, and our friend. So the mom order pizza from Pizza Hut. Everyone had pepperoni. And then she bought a separate pizza just for me and my brother. And it was on the piano, pizza. And me, me and my brother were like, Um, why do we have the whole pizza? We we don't like all the people pizza. We want the pepperoni. They say, Oh, you know, I only ordered so much pizza I assumed he doesn't like it. Doesn't all the Mexicans like little hot opinions and a mean and kind of like now this at this time we were you know about eighth grade going to freshman year so we kind of knew what was going on. And you're like, why would you assume we like jalapenos on our pizza? Because we're Mexican? And I said, You know, all Mexicans love all opinions. And that was an eye opener for me, my brother. And we were just kind of like, Uh, no, that's not the case. Um, you know, can we get some pepperoni? And she just said, Well, this is a waste. And she was kind of mad at us when, in fact, we probably should be more mad at her. But again, you know, we want to respect our elders so we know say too much. But in the day we just took pepperoni pizza anyways. But, um, but yeah, that pretty much ties in with that with those examples.
text/plain
https://archive.empathyarchive.com/collections/1674/collection_resources/56833/file/130979#t=310.27,487.12
https://archive.empathyarchive.com/collections/1674/collection_resources/56833/file/130979/transcript/49479/annotation/9
https://archive.empathyarchive.com/collections/1674/collection_resources/56833/file/130979#t=488.95,489.25
https://archive.empathyarchive.com/collections/1674/collection_resources/56833/file/130979/transcript/49479
["English [Transcript]
https://archive.empathyarchive.com/collections/1674/collection_resources/56833/file/130979/transcript/49479/annotation/10
https://d9jk7wjtjpu5g.cloudfront.net/file_transcripts/associated_files/000/049/479/original/open-uri20230831-975325-nv76yi?1693518132
text/vtt
en
https://d9jk7wjtjpu5g.cloudfront.net/file_transcripts/associated_files/000/049/479/original/open-uri20230831-975325-nv76yi?1693518132"}]}]}]}
