Like, that's how I feel. Like I can define citizenship as, like, definitely being a privileged individual. My mom came to this country when she was seven, and my dad came to this country when with two parents that were working at the time. And then that was my mom. And then my dad came to this country by himself with his brother at the age of 22 with $20 in his pocket. So there's two very different scenarios. Right from my dad's side, I feel definitely like first generation and my mom mom's. I feel a little bit second generation just because she's been here for so long and no single English language really? Well, you know what I mean? And like, if she needed to or if I needed the help, she was able to, like, help me navigate, like, the language. And, I don't know, like, just bureaucratic systems that you need to get through to survive in this country. And my my dad is the complete opposite, right? Like a whenever he speaks, I correct him and he doesn't really understand just like bureaucratic processes, like they just don't really make sense to him. Whatever he needs to get done, he wants to do it now and doesn't understand why this something. Right. And I feel like I was just one of the lucky ones to have had parents who did both become residents and then eventually became citizens in this country. And then, of course, I was born here. But I've had a lot of friends or I do have a lot of friends that are undocumented, and they don't live with the same ease that I do, which is where my definition of privilege comes from. Right. Like I my mom has a lot of stories of where my grandma would be just really scared. You know, like just being in her own home, you know, like, she was always scared that the police were going to come raid her house and take all of her children away, separate the family and support them. You know, so she always would cover the the windows with quirkiness and things like that. You know, and sometimes I would just say things around my friends or like, oh, I'm going to go like, let's go to Mexico for the weekend. And someone say they can get away. You know what I mean? Like, why would you not be able to come with us? And crossing borders is something that I never really considered a big thing, even though, like once you get there, there's like a lot of security and it looks really official and they make it seem like a really big thing. But like these imaginary lines still seem imaginary to me because I can cross them, you know what I mean? As an American citizen, you can pretty much go anywhere in the world. And that's the thing when you're a citizen from another country. Um. So I guess I acted actively. I actively practice citizenship by being so passive about my citizenship like that. That's how I feel. Like I am definitely ignorant in a lot of ways when it comes to the privileges that I'm afforded. Like with my citizenship, there's a lot of things I don't have to second guess. A lot of times I'm not scared when asked for a driver's license. And things like that. So I feel. What are the questions that you ask me?
text/plain
https://archive.empathyarchive.com/collections/1674/collection_resources/56843/file/207675#t=19.05,222.42
https://archive.empathyarchive.com/collections/1674/collection_resources/56843/file/207675/transcript/49545/annotation/5
Speaker 1: Not just that one. And there would just be, like, little things that I said. You know what I mean? Like, like when my brother started driving and she did it. You know what I mean? Like, I didn't understand why she couldn't start driving right away or like, Yeah, think like with, like I was mentioning, like, things I never my passiveness, um, those things didn't apply to her and it started basically conversation, right?
