And and I remember it was like my uncles that I said they were referring to and saying, Oh, watch out with my up there. And so and often times, like, I hear people saying my yapping, but then when referring to that specific insect. But then I think I heard it somewhere else. And it was being they were using it there, using derogatory to refer to a black neighbor. And so then that's the first time I heard like them referring calling someone the derogatory word of a [Unrecognized] to them. And so, um, that's yeah, that's, that's the only time that I've heard my family say it. And this was really because, you know, when my family first arrived from from Mexico to South Central, there was a lot of tensions between black and brown people. So in the 1980s and 1990s, the black community was going through the crack cocaine epidemic. They were going through heavy police brutality, harassment. They were going through major, you know, under-employment and just cuts to social benefit, social welfare programs. And so when during that same time there was a heavy, you know, migration of specifically like Mexicans and also like Salvadorians that were coming into South Central. And so that the media played a big role, too, in saying that all the Latinos or the Mexicans are coming, they're taking the jobs away. And so that created a kind of a created a tension between black and brown folks in the community. And so and also what was not helpful is that the language barrier. And so I think we learn to coexist. But then oftentimes, like I still hear the kind of like the racial derogatory words in my family, whom are our folks from, um, that were born in Mexico? And then at first it was it was seen as a joke. But I think as we the first generation, um, young people or children of our, um, parents and uncles and things like as we grow, um, it's, we start, you know, shutting it down and saying like, no, it's not okay to use those words. Um, because we understood, um, the harm that I made to people.
text/plain
https://archive.empathyarchive.com/collections/1733/collection_resources/56756/file/130917#t=9.19,194.1
https://archive.empathyarchive.com/collections/1733/collection_resources/56756/file/130917/transcript/49441/annotation/3
Speaker 1: Do you remember how old you were when you first heard your family refer to your neighbor?
text/plain
https://archive.empathyarchive.com/collections/1733/collection_resources/56756/file/130917#t=194.94,199.47
https://archive.empathyarchive.com/collections/1733/collection_resources/56756/file/130917/transcript/49441/annotation/4
Speaker 2: Probably like in middle school or something.
